she is loved. | raleigh family photographer

I met up recently with Audrey and her mommy for a Simplicity mini session, which is a short and sweet version of my usual Signature session. We had the most beautiful spring evening at a local park, with amazing, delicious golden light.

I am so in love with this session and the sweet connection it showcases between Audrey and her mom. I always say that every mom should have photographs like these of her child, but you know what? Every child should have photos like these, photos that show just how deeply and madly she is loved.

At this point, I may as well show you the whole slideshow! Ha ha!

Just lovely, isn’t it? It reminds me that I need to hire someone to do this very same thing for me and my daughters. Time marches on, all too quickly.

New life. Is there anything more miraclous? More perfect?

Andrew was all of 5 days old when we met, and he was just a doll. I don’t think he made a single peep while I was there!

His big bro AJ is pretty curious about the new kid in town. They are less than two years apart, and you can just tell they’re going to be best buds.

the cutest baby in the triangle! | raleigh child photographer

When I say Connor is the Cutest Baby in the Triangle, I really mean it! Back in the fall, he won that title in the 0-12 months age category in the Cutest Baby contest put on by WRAL’s Go Ask Mom. Connor’s mom and dad were super excited to get some updated photos of their little man, and we planned for a beautiful spring session. After a couple of run-ins with the weather, we finally met up just a few days before Connor’s first birthday, and I finally got to see for myself that he really is the cutest baby in the Triangle!

See?! Told ya.

Doesn’t he have the most amazing blue eyes? He’s going be a heart-breaker one day, that’s for sure.

AAAHHH, I love that Frankenstein walk that toddlers do when they’re first learning to walk. And yes, he sure is a big toddler now…the cutest one in the Triangle!

Happy birthday, Connor! And special thanks to Sarah and everyone who voted at Go Ask Mom!

true life: 5 fab tips for better pictures of your child | raleigh children’s photographer

Welcome back to True Life! With this twice-monthly series, I’ll be posting helpful tips on taking better pictures of your kids, learning to use your camera, fun ways to display family photos, custom photo gifts, etc.

Cameras are ever-present in kids’ lives these days, with digital cameras being small enough to fit in your pocket, or even integrated into your cell phone. The technology is amazing, and yet it seems harder than ever to take a decent photo of your kids! Here are my all-time top tips to make your next Kodak moment shine.

Keep it simple. Before you click the shutter, remove the clutter. Background objects, logos on clothing, and other visual distractions draw the eye away from your little subject. Try zooming in with your lens or shifting your body a bit to crop out any distracting elements.

Just say no to cheese. When you ask your child to perform a fake smile, don’t be surprised when she gives you more of a grimace – all teeth and no life in the eyes. Instead, engage with your child in a natural manner. Ask her to tell you her favorite joke – you know, the one that always makes her laugh the hardest? Break out the bathroom humor if you must (always a big hit!) Just keep it real, and you can capture those true expressions that you know and love.

children

Turn off your flash. Photography is all about light, but you want the right kind! Natural light, either outside or near a window, is much more flattering for anyone than flash, which can wash out faces and create harsh shadows. Throw open the drapes or take it outdoors. Check your camera manual if you aren’t sure how to turn off the flash.

Know when to say when. Your child will let you know in his own special way that he has had enough of picture time. Sometimes it’s as simple as a baby who won’t look you in the face anymore because he is over-stimulated, or it may be a little more obvious, like the toddler throw-down on the floor. Know your child’s limits and know when to call it quits! Keep photo opportunities fun and your kids won’t  run from you when you take out the camera.

Get in the picture.  Often, moms are the family historians; we are the ones who make sure that life’s big and little moments are documented and photographed. However, it’s important to make sure that we get into photos with our children. One day when your kids are thumbing through albums from their childhoods, they’re going to want to see you there, living and loving on them. They won’t notice or care that you had twenty extra pounds or that your roots were showing. Hand off the camera and get in the frame. Your future self – and your children – will thank you.
