Welcome back to True Life! With this twice-monthly series, I’ll be posting helpful tips on taking better pictures of your kids, learning to use your camera, fun ways to display family photos, custom photo gifts, etc.
This past summer, I discovered a new true love: beach photography. No, not the everyone-wear-white-shirts-and-khaki-pants-and-pretend-we-love-each-other type of photography. Sure, that has its place, but it’s just not me. I like playful, whimsical images that capture the magic of childhood…it feeds my soul.
Anyway! Back to the beach! Last summer I took two of my all-time favorite photos of Claire. First: my darling on a gorgeous beach, blue sky, candy-colored bathing suit. I love everything about it.
But this second photo – oh, it stirs deep in my soul!

This photo is no longer about where she is, it’s just all about her. The wind in her hair. The sand on her cheek. The beauty of her delicate profile. It moves me in ways that the first one just doesn’t.
Not to say that I don’t love the first image! It shows just how teeny my baby is against that wide, deep ocean, and I adore it. But that second image? It makes my heart skip…and that’s what a good photograph will do. Stir up emotion, bring you right there, to that very moment.
It’s why I do what I do, and it’s why I love it so.
All of that to say – change your perspective once in awhile. Get in closer, drop back farther. Zoom with your feet. Shoot up, shoot down. Explore. And make some magic of your own.
