what to wear: casual family life | raleigh family portrait photographer

I have felt my style shifting lately to more of a lifestyle feel with my photography…a little less posed, a little more real. I am drawn to create family photographs that have personality just bursting out of them, that capture the magic of the connections between mom and dad and their children.

Here is a casual look that would fit perfectly into a photography session documenting family life.

be true everyday: surprise your kids with something different!

Welcome back to Be True Everyday! With this weekly series, I’ll be posting helpful tips on taking better pictures of your kids, learning to use your camera, fun ways to display family photos, custom photo gifts, etc.

If your kids are moaning and groaning everytime you pull your camera out, why not shake things up a bit? Surprise them with something new and completely different, and I guarantee they’ll be more than happy to cooperate for you!

A few months ago, I did just that…I surprised Macy and Claire with a bubble bath. It was special for them because 1) it was the middle of the day (for the light, of course!) and 2) it was in Mommy’s BIG bathtub! Fun!

So I encourage you to think up something different and creative for your kids to do, and then capture it! Make some memories with your family!

P.S. I love comments! Feel free to share any ideas you have for making fun family memories!

mine on monday: valentine crafts

Today is the Valentine’s Day party at Macy’s preschool, and parents were tasked with helping their children create a Valentine card holder at home. Umm…I can barely cut a straight line, much create things from nothing! I’m the girl who walks around Michael’s for an hour and leaves empty-handed because I just don’t even know where to begin.

Okay, I figure, we got this! It can’t be that hard, right? So I start hunting around for ideas on Pinterest – my go-to inspiration source – and didn’t really find much. So I figured I would just keep it simple. I covered a cereal box with brown kraft paper, bought a little love-themed scrapbook kit and let Macy go to town!

She also punched hearts out of scrapbook paper and glued them around the edges of the box. I was hoping she would do a little more coloring on it to really make it her own, but she said it was “just perfect.” And it is.:)

Of course, little sister wanted to make her own valentine creation as well.

What, you don’t do Valentine crafts in your bathing suit?

And the finished project!

Of course, we also needed to do Valentine’s Day cards for Macy to hand out to her classmates as well. This time, I found a TON of “Pinspiration,” and we went with this:

I love them, and Macy does too. She’s very into wordplay these days, so it was right up her alley!

Happy Valentine’s Day, my little love. I’m sorry Mommy isn’t such a crafty gal, but we have sure have fun trying, don’t we?

introducing lori bruhns – everyday tidy, llc | raleigh mompreneur feature

Raise your hand if “Get Organized” is on your New Year’s resolution list this year. Almost everyone? Now raise your hand if “Get Organized” makes your resolution list pretty much every year…

Yeah, me too! It always seems like there’s something that needs simplifying/organizing/purging/cleaning or even just a new system of doing things. That’s why I’m so glad to have met up with Lori Bruhns recently – she owns Everyday Tidy, LLC out of Hillsborough, and she is just the woman to help us busy moms!

mompreneur feature by raleigh photographer

Lori, I am so glad that we could meet up for this interview! Can we start off with a little about yourself?

I am married to Mike and we have twin 6-year old sons named Traver and Enzo, who just started kindergarten this year. I double-majored in Spanish and secondary education at Ryder University, and taught Spanish at the middle and high school level before my boys were born. I left teaching when my children were born due to the cost of childcare, but when they were about 7 months old, I started Everyday Tidy, LLC.

Tell us about Everyday Tidy.

I help people who want to take control of their time and clutter to enjoy the things they really love. I do many speaking engagements and seminars at small and medium businesses for time management and productivity, my own workshops on various topics, and also individual one-on-ones.

What inspired you to start Everyday Tidy?

When my boys were born, being organized and on top of things was extremely important. My husband and I didn’t have any family nearby to help out, so we were on our own. I had learned a lot about organization in my education studies in college, so I put my skills to use as a new mom. Then one day I thought, “you know, I could teach people how to do this!”

What’s your favorite part about running your own business?

Oh, the instant gratification! In teaching, the rewards usually came much later, as when my former students would come back to visit to tell me how much they learned and how they enjoyed my classes. Now with my individual clients, I get rewarding feedback right away.

What do you want your clients to take away from their experience with you?

I love showing my clients how much they are capable of, and that they can actually do it! Slowly, we put together a system that is built into their lives, and take small little goals to make a bigger goal come true.

How do you manage to juggle motherhood and your businesses?

I have found that I need to really listen to my heart, even when my mind wants to do something different. I make myself turn off the computer and phone at 2pm when my boys get home, even on days that I don’t want to. I know I need to have the patience to allow my business to grow slowly while my kids are young.

raleigh headshot photography

What’s the best thing about being mom to Traver and Enzo?

Everything! Seeing them through each stage, I think, is the best part. I’ve been so fortunate to be there for all of the firsts, like recently their first day of kindergarten!

If you could share one tip for other mom entrepreneurs, what would it be?

Know that you are your own business. Your work will always be there no matter how fast or slow it grows. But your kids won’t always be this small or this young. Relish in that.

I  had such a good time speaking with you, Lori, so thank you for taking the time to introduce yourself to our blog readers! I also want to thank you for your patience and grace while dealing with my technical issues!

I wanted to add a couple of things that really stood out to me about Lori. I noticed when talking with her that she doesn’t just bring an organizational system into your life and try to fit you into the system…no, she actually observes your struggles and designs a system that fits into YOUR life. She also spoke of starting off with just making tweaks to what you do, rather than a massive overhaul of your life. I love her ideas so much, and I’m sure they help her clients to stick with the systems that they’ve worked at putting into place.

Another thing that Lori mentioned – your home does not need to be picture-perfect! (Or even Pinterest-perfect!) While it’s great to look to magazines for inspiration, don’t feel like your home must look magazine-worthy for you to be organized. And I agree…an organizational system can look beautiful, but if it doesn’t function well, or fit into your famiy’s life, it just won’t work. And then you’ll be back to making more resolutions…again!

Lori is THE BEST! She is smart, honest, empathetic, efficient, and effective! I called Lori for the first time last January, when I was 7 months pregnant with twins and had just moved into a new home. My husband and I are clutter magnets and definitely needed help. We had been used to having everything “horizontally filed” on our floors and counter tops.
Lori came in and helped us develop really solid organizational systems that we still use everyday. She is wonderful because she really listens to you and works WITH you to implement lasting systems that fit your own unique personality and style.
Lori’s help has truly been a gift to my family and me. Things in my home now have a place, my closet continues to stay organized, and I am so much less stressed and scattered. My ten-month-old twins can crawl around every room in the house, and I don’t have to worry that they’ll get lost in a pile of clothes on the floor. Thank you, Lori!

Kim, thank you so much for sharing your experience! I love hearing real life results like this!

Nancy Maloney - February 13, 2012 - 10:13 pm

Lori has restored peace to our house! She is wonderful. She helped organize our son in middle school. We had been unsuccessful at fixing the implosion that was his desk and back pack. He could loose things from point A to point B. His ability to recall, complete and turn in assignments was lacking, to say the least. Lori helped him develop a method of organization that he continues to use in high school. She really worked with him, to get a system that he could maintain. We could not have done it without Lori. Thank you, Lori. We would highly recommend her to other frustrated parents.

It’s a girl!

This darling girl made her debut in January, and her parents had chosen to keep her gender a surprise. I always love getting that “baby’s here!” email for my surprise babies – it’s so much fun!

I’ve had quite a run of baby boys on the blog - six I believe, so it is nice to change it up and see some pink and purple!

Meet Aspen Paige…

raleigh nc newborn photography

I had the honor and complete joy of creating Aspen’s newborn photographs when she was just 5 days old, and she was simply perfect. She gave me some nice sleepy time…

But also some great awake time, which I am loving more and more with my newborn photography!

newborn photographers raleigh nc

She has beautiful blond hair, perfect skin…such a little doll!

raleigh newborn photography

Aspen’s uncle built this cradle for her, using the frame of the original cradle that her mommy slept in as a babe. And Aspen is laying on a quilt that her great-great aunt made for her grandfather when he was a baby, 65 years ago! Also in this post, you’ll see two blankets that Aspen’s grandmother made for her (one pink and one yellow!)

Being able to incorporate these sentimental items into Aspen’s newborn photos just makes my heart sing. Not only will her family cherish these photos because they feature their precious baby girl, but “things” can’t last forever, even very special “things.” But photography can live on throughout even more future generations. (Yes, that’s my sappy side coming out…I can’t help it! I love what I do!)
