Hello February!

Welcome back to Be True Everyday! With this weekly series, I’ll be posting helpful tips on taking better pictures of your kids, learning to use your camera, fun ways to display family photos, custom photo gifts, etc.
This past summer, I discovered a new true love: beach photography. No, not the everyone-wear-white-shirts-and-khaki-pants-and-pretend-we-love-each-other type of photography. Sure, that has its place, but it’s just not me. I like playful, whimsical images that capture the magic of childhood…it feeds my soul.
Anyway! Back to the beach! Last summer I took two of my all-time favorite photos of Claire. First: my darling on a gorgeous beach, blue sky, candy-colored bathing suit. I love everything about it.

But this second photo – oh, it stirs deep in my soul!

This photo is no longer about where she is, it’s just all about her. The wind in her hair. The sand on her cheek. The beauty of her delicate profile. It moves me in ways that the first one just doesn’t.
Not to say that I don’t love the first image! It shows just how teeny my baby is against that wide, deep ocean, and I adore it. But that second image? It makes my heart skip…and that’s what a good photograph will do. Stir up emotion, bring you right there, to that very moment.
It’s why I do what I do, and it’s why I love it so.
All of that to say – change your perspective once in awhile. Get in closer, drop back farther. Zoom with your feet. Shoot up, shoot down. Explore. And make some magic of your own.

Lovely pictures and awesome photography.
Have you ever heard of bloggers doing “OPAM: One Project a Month?” I’ve run across it a few times, and as I was setting goals for 2012, I thought it would be a great idea to try. Just one project, every month, nothing major but something fun. (Last year’s 52-week photo project stalled out a little over halfway through, so I’m hoping for something I can actually keep up with this time!)
Working from home, I have the privilege of staring at the walls around me with a mixture of “what the heck should I put there” and “when are we ever going to be able to afford to redo our living room?” and “what was I thinking when I did that?!” Of course, I’m a busy mom and photographer, so I don’t have too much time, but one project a month, whether big or small, well…I think I can handle that.
So lately I’ve been grousing about the coats/jackets/papers/backpacks/lunchboxes/bags/shoes and everything else that comes into our home and gets dumped in the foyer. I’ve been drooling over the super cute mudroom setups I’ve found recently on Pinterest (aka my second home), and was considering some sort of mash-up between this one and this one and this one. Sigh…be still my little organizing heart!
The problem though – we only have one usable wall in our foyer, and it faces the door to our coat closet. So my little mudroom couldn’t be deeper than about 12 inches to allow for foot traffic – yikes. Plus it just had to look pretty, being in the foyer right there when you open the door and all! And with a 5 and almost 3-year old responsible for hanging up their stuff? I just knew it wouldn’t turn out like a magazine. (Of course, none of my organizing projects look like the magazines. Can I get an Amen?) Also, I love all the neutral colors in the inspiration photos, but my kids’ coats are bright pink and purple. They don’t exactly scream beautiful interior design.
So I scrapped that idea.
Then I ran across this little gem, and I was inspired.

Our coat closet is super deep, which is on one hand a blessing (yay! storage space!), but on the other hand, a curse. Our coats hang waaaaay in the back (when they actually get hung at all!) and the space in between was steadily getting packed in with my photography props…meaning you couldn’t hang up your coat if you tried. So we pulled everything out, purged a ton of items, and came up with this!

We (meaning Mike) bought the wood and the hooks, and we used paint that we already had on hand, so it ended up being super cheap! But oh, those chevron stripes…a little (lot) taxing for someone like me who has zero patience for crafts and DIY stuff.

But in the end, I actually love it, and even enjoyed the experience! (Not enough to do chevron on the bottom row though! Ha ha!) But even if no one ever sees my little striped hangers, I still smile every time I see them. Even when all the stuff comes back in and ruins the pretty view.

Soooooo…I couldn’t just leave that foyer wall bare with nothing going on after all of my scheming and dreaming. So guess what I did?
Yep. A photo gallery wall! I love it! (And not just because it makes this post photo-related!)

I used different frames that I had been collecting over the past year, and I really love how they all work together. I think my favorites are the round frames at the top…they just add some drama and movement to an otherwise boring wall!

Yay! One project down, eleven to go. (And now I’m wondering if I should have cheated and saved the photo wall for February….dang it!)![]()

Tis the season of newborn baby boys! (Although if you’ve been to the Facebook page lately, you know there’s a sweet baby girl that broke the all boy streak! She’ll soon make her blog debut!)
But back to my friend Gabriel…he was so amazing during his session! He slept so well, tolerated me moving him all over the house, and was just a perfectly happy little guy!
This rug is in Gabriel’s living room, and I just loved the color and texture of it! Walking into my client’s homes is always so inspiring…I almost always find a way to incorporate ”home” into a photo session – it just becomes that much more personal and sentimental.

Isn’t it funny, most of the babies I photograph like to sleep with their hands up over their heads. They must be relishing all of the room they can stretch out into after months of living in cramped quarters.

I’m totally in love with these family images in Gabriel’s nursery.

This image is one of my favorites from our morning…

And one last one just because I love the yellow!

Thanks to Gabriel’s family for making me feel so welcome and comfortable! I’ll see you again soon!

He is pure sweetness. Your lighting is so soft and perfect for this sweet boy.
Such a sweet newborn session. Your clients home is beautiful and the lovely light is amazing. How wonderful that you were able to incorporate the home into the images. Beautiful.
Oh I LOVE the one of him looking over mom’s shoulder.. It looks like he is smirking!! Lovely images, beautiful session.
Love the photo of him holding his little head up! What a doll!

I love seeing the variety you were able to capture in their home and including the parents as well in some of the captures.
Oh my, I can’t even choose a favorite, they are all wonderful! I love how you incorporated items from their home, so special and meaninful. Such an inspiration for me!!

EXACTLY what every mom dreams of – beautiful, timeless images like these!
Oh my, Gabriel is a handsome little man! Can’t wait to see him in person! (He’s my sister’s nephew) Wonderful job, Christy!
Recently, Cary Heise asked if I had any good book recommendations…do I ever! Last year I accomplished my goal of reading 52 books in 52 weeks, so I thought I’d come share some of my favorites!
Fiction:
Room: A Novel by Emma Donoghue
Whoa. A real stunner, beautifully written.
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
This sat on my shelf for a year before I opened it. An amazing story, loved it!
The Hunger Games Trilogy Boxed Set by Suzanne Collins
Wow! The whole trilogy is thrilling and imaginative and different. I’m dying for the movie to come out!
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
I didn’t think it would live up to all the hype, but I was pleasantly surprised. The first in the series is the best.
Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
All seven of ‘em. I had seen all of the movies, but gosh, the books are so much better!
Non-fiction:
EntreLeadership by Dave Ramsey
Ought to be required reading for anyone starting a business!
All Your Worth by Elizabeth Warren and Amelia Warren Tyagi
Don’t you wish personal finance was a required class in school? We’d all be a little bit richer for it, I believe.
Organized Simplicity by Tsh Oxenreider
Such a great resource for any mom who wants to try to manage kids/house/work/life a little better.
The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin
Happy! And made me want to start my own happiness project.
How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie
A classic. I bet you didn’t know that I’m a big-time introvert, and terribly shy. I swear there are few who are less socially awkward than me! I’m trying to break out of my shell though, and this book is a good reference.
I’m planning to read another 52 books this year, and I’ve got two done so far. I’m currently in the middle of Steve Jobs, which is long but more interesting than I had anticipated! I’ll let you know how it goes!
