introducing eli | raleigh lifestyle newborn photographer

Do you remember this beautiful mama’s maternity session, back in March? We did the session in Lauren and Seth’s downtown Raleigh apartment, so it was WAY fun to return for this:

SO gorgeous!

Eli took his sweet little time coming into the world, about two weeks past his due date! So you know his parents were MORE than ready to meet their perfect new son. (And even big brother Roscoe had to get into the family photo!)

I have way too many favorites from this session, so I’m sorry for over-sharing! But how can you not love this sweet face?!

I’m also in LOVE with these mama-baby images.

And we can’t leave out daddy! He’s got the magic swaddling touch.

This session was my idea of the perfect newborn photography session…we got lots of family images, lots of mom and dad loving on their new little bub. Lots of “at home” photos…some sweet sleepy baby photos…and lots of love in this growing family. Yep, perfect.

Stunning images! And that baby is so beautiful.

I adore maternity sessions! I’m usually chasing toddlers or soothing newborns to sleep, so when I have a grown person in front of my camera that smiles on command AND stays in one place?! It’s like a little vacation. Ha!

I met up with Stacie and Erik on a cool, misty morning recently to capture some beautiful pregnancy portraits before their first baby arrives next month. I know they are SO ready to meet her!

On a side note, doesn’t Stacie have the most gorgeous hair color? I LOVE it! Hmmm…maybe I’ll try that color next. Could you see me as a redhead?;)

Lovely! And what a perfect setting.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the wonderful, amazing, loving mommies out there today!

I found these cute little printable questionnaires (via Pinterest, of course!) and I thought it would be cute to do them with my girls. I’ll probably look for one for Father’s Day too, so let me know if you have seen any good ones!

I am waking up to a quiet house today, as my girls are at the lake with Grandma and Mike is in Florida for work. But soon I’ll be off to join the kiddies, and maybe I’ll convince them to take me out to a nice dinner on the town. Ha!

I hope your Mother’s Day is everything you wish for it to be! (And can I just say, for the record…no matter your philosophies or theories or mom “status”…you ARE mom enough! You’re all Supermoms to me.)

three months | raleigh baby photographer

Sarma is the sweet little baby doll of an old college friend, and I was so lucky to meet her when she was in town with her mama a couple of weeks ago! I am so happy to know that they will soon be moving back to the Triangle, which means I get to watch this little girl grow.

Photographing 3-month olds is pure fun. At this stage, babies are really starting to show their little personalities and have such great facial expressions!

Ah, so CUTE!

And of course, my favorite photographs are the ones that show the L-O-V-E…it means so much to me to be able to create images that show families’ true connection to one another. Mama and baby photos always melt me!

Thanks Emily! Can’t wait to see you guys again later this year!

the only way to improve your photos | raleigh family photographer

Welcome back to True Life! With this twice-monthly , I’ll be posting helpful tips on taking better pictures of your kids, learning to use your camera, fun ways to display family photos, custom photo gifts, etc.

“It’s not necessarily the amount of time you spend at practice that counts; it’s what you put into the practice.” ~ Eric Lindros

Today’s tip for taking better photos of your kids…

PRACTICE.

Sorry, were you hoping for something more profound? Of course you knew you need to practice, so why am I dedicating a whole blog post to it?

According to Wikipedia, practice is the act of rehearsing a behavior over and over, or engaging in an activity again and again, for the purpose of improving or mastering it.

But when I say practice, I don’t mean to shoot hundreds of really terrible, awful, just-plain-bad photos of your kids at every moment of every day until they start to run away when they see you coming. I mean really take the time to shoot intentionally. You won’t get it right on the first try, and you probably won’t get it right on the 50th try. But if you’re not trying, if you’re “spraying and praying,” the only thing you’ll get better at is taking more bad photos!

Here are some photos I took of Macy back in September 2009. I was practicing shooting in manual mode, and I wanted to work on exposure. I set Macy up near a window in her room and went to town. But with intention. (And a particularly goofy subject.)

(Oh my gosh, look how little she was! Ack!)

Now it’s your turn. If you truly want to improve, you’ve got to work at it. Whether it’s photography, cooking from scratch, playing the guitar, or painting a masterpiece, we all start from the beginning.

Decide what it is you want to learn, whether it’s focus, exposure, or just playing with the light. I was (am) all over the place when learning new things, but it may suit you better to choose one topic at a time to work on.

Just practice, practice, practice.

P.S. I still practice. That’s one thing I love about photography…I feel like I can practice at it for the rest of my life, and there will always be more to learn.
